The arguments are ferocious, both for and against. News in the Western Isles isn't always that riveting. Without being condescending, it usually boils down to smart pictures like the sheep waiting for the bus at the junction to Maraig and Reinigeadal, 7 miles north of Tarbert, Harris. The Stornoway Gazette is a weekly newspaper for the Western Isles, focused on the Isle of Lewis, but with occasional news from the other islands as well. The Hebridean is a sister publication, with a wider area coverage which includes Skye. The Oban Times covers news from the islands south of Ardnamurchan, including Mull, as well as Argyll. West Word is a monthly community newspaper for Mallaig, Knoydart, Arisaig and the Small Isles The West Highland Free Press is directed towards readers in Skye, Western Isles and the North West mainland of Scotland. It is a radical publication, which champions causes like landreform and is vociferous in its condemnation of (absentee) landlords. Its motto 'The Land, the Culture, the People' pretty much summarizes its remit.
