How to reach the islands

FERRYLINKS
Stornoway  is linked by ferry to Ullapool.
Lochmaddy (North Uist) and Tarbert (Harris) are linked to Uig (Skye)
Lochboisdale (South Uist) and Castlebay (Barra) are linked to Oban.
Eriskay is linked to Ardmhor (Barra)
Leverburgh (Harris) is linked to Berneray for North Uist
ROADLINKS
Ullapool can be reached from Inverness by taking the A9 to Wick, then the A835 to Ullapool. Distance: about 55 miles.

Uig in Skye is located 225 miles northwest of Glasgow. Take the A82 from Glasgow all the way to Invergarry, 25 miles north of Fort William. From there, take the A87 to Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge, then right across Skye to Uig via Portree.

Alternative: Take the A830 from Fort William to Mallaig, then the ferry to Armadale in Skye. From Armadale, take the A851 to Broadford, then the A87 to Uig via Portree. Note that the Skye ferry is liable to disruption in high winds.

Oban is located about 90 miles northwest of Glasgow. Take the A82 to Tyndrum, then the A85 to Oban.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT LINKS to ports
The ferry port at Oban can easily be reached by First Scotrail train from Glasgow Queen Street. The same applies to Inverness, the railhead nearest to Ullapool.

Scottish Citylink operates long-distance coaches from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Uig (Skye) as well as from Inverness to Ullapool.

Loganair operates air-services under the BA banner to the islands out of Glasgow. There are airports at Stornoway, Benbecula and Barra. Other operators are available.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT WITHIN THE ISLANDS
The website of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (click on logo) provides information of public transport within the islands. Although not frequent, there is a very good network of buses within Lewis and Harris, as well as the Uists.

Loganair operates inter-island airservices.
